What is Sex Positivity?

What is Sex Positivity?

The term "sex positive" is used a lot these days, but what does it actually mean?

Put simply, sex positivity is the idea that all consensual sexual activity is good and healthy.

This includes, but is not limited to, activities like masturbation, pornography, kink, and polyamory. Sex positivity also puts an emphasis on communication and consent; in a sex positive world, all parties involved would feel comfortable discussing their needs and boundaries before engaging in any sexual activity.

Is Sex Positivity the Same as Promiscuity?

One of the most common misconceptions about sex positivity is that it's synonymous with promiscuity. This couldn't be further from the truth; you can be sex positive without being sexually active at all. Being sex positive simply means having a healthy and affirming attitude towards sex.

How Does Sex Positivity Relate to Feminism?

So how does this concept relate to feminism?

For starters, both sex positivity and feminism seek to de-stigmatize activities that have been traditionally seen as taboo.

In a patriarchal society, women's sexuality is often seen as something that needs to be controlled; by reclaiming our sexuality and celebrating it openly, we challenge this harmful way of thinking.

In addition, many feminist thinkers see sex positivity as a way to combat rape culture.

In a culture that constantly objectifies and degrades women, it's no wonder that sexual violence is so prevalent. By teaching people—particularly young men—that women are not objects to be used for their pleasure, we can help create a safer and more respectful world for everyone.

Sex positivity is a movement that is gaining traction all over the world. Whether you're sexually active or not, there are many ways to get involved in this important movement. From de-stigmatizing taboo activities to teaching consent and respect, there's something for everyone who wants to make the world a better place for everybody.
